Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua – The Story

Eyebrows were raised when it was announced that Jake Paul would be fighting Anthony Joshua, it’s fair to say.

Despite promoter attempts to portray this fight as a difficult test for the British heavyweight star, the reality is that this is a contest between a YouTuber and one of the most dominant heavyweights of the modern era. This two-time world champion boasts wins over Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker, Alexander Povetkin, and Dillian Whyte, amongst others. In contrast, Paul is effectively an amateur who only entered the sport thanks to his massive social media following and has been boxing for a little over five years.

Of course, money is a central part of the narrative, with both fighters expected to take home eye-watering amounts from a reported $184 million purse. Joshua has been reported to be receiving £70 million for the contest at a point in his career where there are question marks over his future in the sport.

Having not fought since his brutal knockout at the hands of Daniel Dubois in September 2024, Joshua looked to be making a comeback with four straight wins following his pair of defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. However, the manner of his defeat to Dubois raised questions marks over whether Joshua could fight at the top level again, and, frankly, taking a fight against a YouTube personality, having already recently fought MMA star Francis Ngannou, will only pose more questions.

For Paul, aside from the potential health risks of stepping into a fight with such a dangerous opponent, this fight is relatively no-lose. Nobody expects him to win, and a victory for him would surely be the most shocking in the history of the sport. Defeat would not damage his reputation or standing in any way.

He has a bizarre boxing record that includes victories over some of the biggest names in combat sports, including Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Mike Tyson. However, the fact that Tyson was barely able to walk at the time of that bout should serve as a giant asterisk over the credibility of the win, and Paul’s sole defeat did come at the hands of a boxer, albeit a very limited one, in Tommy Fury.

This bout will inevitably generate huge attention across the sporting world and will be an enormous betting event. Still, questions must be asked about the validity of the contest and the level of effort Anthony Joshua is putting in, should it extend beyond a couple of rounds.

Jake Paul Vs. Anthony Joshua Betting Preview & Tips

There is no point pretending that in any sane world, this fight should end in any way other than a comprehensive Anthony Joshua win. It is a staggering mismatch on almost every metric.

When it comes to professional records, there can be no comparison. Joshua has fought and beaten some of the greatest modern heavyweights en route to becoming a two-time world champion, and although perhaps no longer at his peak, he is many levels above Jake Paul.

Paul’s record includes a win over another heavyweight great, Mike Tyson, as well as a victory against perhaps the greatest MMA fighter in history, Anderson Silva. However, having a victory over Mike Tyson on your record is no longer the bragging right it once was, considering that Tyson was 58 at the time, barely able to move, and hadn’t been in the ring professionally for 19 years.

When it comes to physicality, it also isn’t close. At 6 feet 5, Joshua towered above his 6-foot-1 opponent at the weigh-in. And although Joshua has been set a 245lbs weight limit for the contest, it remains 46.5lbs heavier than Paul was in his most recent contest against Julio Chavez Jr, though he did weigh 228lbs when fighting Tyson.

Joshua has his credibility on the line here. If he retains any hope of salvaging his professional career, he cannot afford anything other than a resounding stoppage win in this fight.

However, question marks remain over whether he will carry Paul for a couple of rounds to make a show of the event, before upping the tempo and taking him out. Given the money at stake, I do not expect Joshua to go out all guns blazing because, quite frankly, if he did, it would be over within a minute.

Jake Paul lasted the distance in his only defeat against Tommy Fury, another eight-round contest. Although I cannot see the same happening again, I expect Joshua to allow him to survive a couple of rounds before taking him out, because anything beyond this will damage his reputation.

As such, for my main betting tip, I am looking towards the round group betting. In the alternative round groups market, Joshua to win in rounds 3-4 is priced at +450, and this could be a shrewd bet for those who are similarly questioning the legitimacy of this contest.

Supplement it by also backing Joshua to win in round 3 exactly, an outcome priced at +700, and you have a good window for AJ’s eventual victory.

Anthony Joshua Profile

Anthony Joshua remains one of the era’s defining heavyweights, an Olympic gold medallist, former unified champion, and one of the most physically imposing boxers on the planet.

After a turbulent few years involving trainer changes and tough losses, he rebuilt his career with emphatic victories. His second-round knockout of Francis Ngannou in early 2024 reminded everyone of his destructive power, and before that, he smashed Robert Helenius with a clinical seventh-round KO. He also banked a solid unanimous decision over Jermaine Franklin during his rebuilding phase.

His one setback in this recent stretch was a stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois, but that fight came with controversy and hasn’t shifted his standing as a top-tier heavyweight. Joshua enters this bout with a massive size, strength, and experience advantage. He’s more measured than the all-action version from his early career, but still a deadly finisher when he finds his rhythm.

Five Most Recent Fights:

  • Daniel Dubois – Loss (KO 5)
  • Francis Ngannou – Win (KO 2)
  • Robert Helenius – Win (KO 7)
  • Jermaine Franklin – Win (UD)
  • Oleksandr Usyk – Loss (UD/SD)

Jake Paul Profile

Jake Paul has risen from a novelty boxer to a legitimate professional, gaining momentum and purpose. His reputation shifted dramatically once he started beating established fighters, not just influencers or retired MMA names.

His recent run has been his strongest yet, highlighted by a unanimous-decision win over Mike Tyson in late 2024 and another UD victory over Julio César Chávez Jr. in mid-2025. Before that, he stopped Mike Perry in the sixth round, blasted out Ryan Bourland in a round, and iced Andre August in under a minute.

Paul is a patient, power-first fighter who relies on timing his right hand and controlling distance. He still has defensive holes and hasn’t faced anyone close to Joshua’s level, but he’s disciplined, improving, and physically strong for a cruiserweight. His confidence is sky-high after beating recognizable names, and he enters this fight swinging for the biggest upset of his career.

Five Most Recent Fights:

  • Julio César Chávez Jr. – Win (UD)
  • Mike Tyson – Win (UD)
  • Mike Perry – Win (TKO 6)
  • Ryan Bourland – Win (TKO 1)
  • Andre August – Win (KO 1)
