Crypto Gambling Editorial Strategy

From missed penalties to buzzer-beaters and blown leads, sports fandom can be an emotional roller coaster, one that sometimes results in some very colorful language.

To find out which fans are the most prone to letting their tempers (and tongues) run wild, CryptoManiaks analyzed thousands of Reddit comments from the top 50 threads across NBA, NFL, NHL, and Premier League subreddits over the last 12 months.
Using a curated list of English-language profanities, we identified which online fan communities had the highest percentage of comments containing expletives to reveal the most foul-mouthed fanbases in sport.

Key Findings

  • Philadelphia fans among worst offenders in two leagues: both 76ers (NBA) and Eagles (NFL) fans rank among the biggest users of bad language, cementing the city’s reputation for passionate (and sometimes potty-mouthed) supporters.
  • American sports fans curse more than Brits: profanity rates were higher across U.S. leagues compared to the UK’s Premier League fanbases.
  • Boston Bruins supporters posted the highest share of swearwords across all leagues.

NFL fans who use the most profanity online

If passion were a contact sport, Dallas Cowboys fans would be perennial champions.
Supporters of ‘America’s Team’ were found to be the most foul-mouthed in the NFL, with 14.2% of their Reddit comments laced with expletives – narrowly beating out Philadelphia Eagles fans at 14.1%.
In fact, over 13% of fan comments for every team in the NFL’s top five featured strong language, highlighting the high tensions during the season.

Premier League fans who use the most profanity online

Across the Atlantic, soccer fans proved far less fiery online, though there’s still no shortage of colorful opinions.
West Ham United fans topped the Premier League list, with 12.9% of fan comments containing profanity, closely followed by Crystal Palace (12.4%) and Tottenham Hotspur (11.8%).
Across the Premier League table, fan profanity rates are notably lower than their U.S. counterparts

NBA fans who use the most profanity online

Few sports stir emotion like basketball, where the margins between victory and heartbreak can come down to a single shot. And that intensity clearly carries into fan discussions online.
According to our data, Philadelphia 76ers fans top the NBA chart, with 15.3% of comments containing profanity.
The Miami Heat (14.0%) and New York Knicks (13.0%) fanbases round out the top three, showing that frustration is alive and well in the Eastern Conference.

NHL fans who use the most profanity online

Ice hockey might occur on a frozen surface, but online, NHL fans’ tempers run hot.
Boston Bruins supporters were crowned the most expressive fans across all sports leagues analyzed, with 16.6% of comments containing profanity – higher than any NBA, NFL, or EPL fanbases.
Toronto Maple Leafs (14.7%) and Edmonton Oilers (14.1%) fans featured prominently, confirming that even Canada’s famously polite reputation has limits once the puck drops.

Certain fanbases have always been known for wearing their hearts on their sleeves, which can sometimes lead to letting their language slip.
Philadelphia is a sporting city that has long held a reputation for expressive fans, so it’s no surprise to see them towards the top of multiple categories. But both Boston and Vegas fans are right there with them thanks to the Celtics, Bruins, Raiders, and Golden Knights all having top-five finishes in their respective leagues.
Ultimately, it’s that intensity, which comes from experiencing all the highs and lows, that makes following sports, in any form, so addictive.
