Berachain has announced its mainnet will go live on 6 February 2025, along with the first release of the BERA token.
The project was developed by a team of pseudonymous founders known for their bear-themed personas. The announcement comes shortly after the project closed its Boyco deposit program.
Berachain’s proof of liquidity approach
Berachain has developed its blockchain using a new security approach called ‘proof of liquidity’, according to technical documents from the project. This system differs from traditional blockchain networks by requiring validators to maintain specific liquidity levels rather than just staking tokens.
The platform builds on two established blockchain frameworks. It combines Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility, allowing it to run Ethereum-style smart contracts, with the Cosmos SDK infrastructure.
Testing of these systems began in January 2024 with the launch of Artio, Berachain’s public testnet. The trial period has focused on validating the proof of liquidity mechanism and network stability. The extended testing phase pushed the mainnet launch beyond its initial Q2 2024 target to the upcoming February date.
The development team has also secured $100million in funding in March 2024 through a Series B funding round, bringing its collective funding amount to over $142m.
BERA token launch set to happen alongside mainnet
The timing of the token launch appears carefully coordinated with the mainnet release. The Foundation reports both events will happen simultaneously. With this, users can access the live network and its native token. This approach differs from some blockchain launches that separate token distribution from network activation.
Recent preparations included closing the Boyco deposit program, though the Foundation hasn’t released specific details about how many users participated or the total value locked. For infrastructure support, Berachain has focused on three critical areas: secure asset custody, reliable communication between different blockchains, and efficient data management across the network.
Elsewhere, Smokey the Bera has been tweeting following the mainnet announcement.
