Here’s a bit of a bombshell to wake you up: “Effective Monday, February 25, 2019, Nasdaq … will send real-time Bitcoin and Ethereum index level information on the Nasdaq Global Index.”

Here’s a bit of a bombshell to wake you up: “Effective Monday, February 25, 2019, Nasdaq … will send real-time Bitcoin and Ethereum index level information on the Nasdaq Global Index.”

This is big news. We are witnessing, for all intents and purposes, the first baby steps of a big giant into a new wading pool. Granted, Bitcoin and Ethereum are not new pools...but they are for institutional investors. This is one of their first steps. After all, the first step to taking the plunge is finding the pool. And this index will show them that crypto and blockchain are here, and here to stay. An emerging asset class.

The Nasdaq will offer a Bitcoin Liquid Index (BLX) and an Ethereum Liquid Index (ELX). These will show real-time spot or reference rates for the price of 1 BTC and 1 ETH, quoted in USD, and based on the most liquid ends of their markets. The BLX was calculated back to 2010 and the ELX was calculated back to 2014.

There’s a saying: “As does America -- so does the world.” It may not be true to the same force as it once was when the U.S. was more powerful -- but it still holds some water. This news from Nasdaq shows where they are going. They are preparing. They are ready. They are eager.

And why not? Coinbase, the largest exchange in the U.S. announced it acquired Keystone Capital, a financial services firm, just so they could speed up the process of becoming a fully regulated broker-dealer. In other words, they are preparing for institutional investors too. Myriad large players are preparing for the future of cryptocurrencies. Many budding new companies are doing the same. Educational sites, like Cryptomaniaks, are also preparing by teaching people things like the “Ultimate Blockchain 101 Guide.”

The future of cryptocurrencies is bright. From Smart Contracts to STOs to institutional investors tiptoeing into the whole pool -- it’s time to learn about where our digital world is going so we can be there when it arrives.
